Case study: The restoration of a Victorian tiled floor in a church
Project overview:
We were tasked with restoring a Victorian tiled floor in a church that had been covered in 30 years’ worth of topical polish. Over time, the thick layer of polish had accumulated a significant amount of dirt and grime. This build-up resulted in a patchy, uneven, and dull appearance that detracted from the original tiles’ charm.
The challenge:
Our challenge was to restore the floor to its original condition. In order to do this, we had to carefully remove the heavy layers of polish, dirt and grime without damaging the delicate tiles underneath.
The solution:
To minimise disruption and ensure a thorough restoration, the work was completed over two carefully planned shifts. During this time, we carried out the following steps:
- Chemical and machinery stripping
We began by using a combination of chemical treatments and specialised machinery to meticulously remove decades of polish and grime. This step was necessary to reveal the vibrant tiles hidden beneath layers of dirt.
- Sealing and finishing
After stripping the floor back to its original condition, we applied two coats of a high-quality solvent sealer. This process not only protected the tiles, but also enhanced their natural colours and textures, giving the floor a fresh, glossy finish.
The result:
The Victorian tiled floor has been restored, looking clean, bright, and fully sealed. Our meticulous restoration process has brought back the floor’s original charm, making it look brand-new while ensuring its durability for many years to come.
