Case study: Revamping the flooring at Elswick Community Pool
Project overview:
Elswick Community Pool has long been a valued hub for local residents, a place where people of all ages can come together for exercise, lessons, and leisure. Over time, however, with so many visitors passing through each week, the flooring in key areas had begun to show signs of wear and tear.
To address, the leisure centre asked us to deliver a complete flooring transformation that would not only improve the look and feel of the space, but also enhance safety for visitors.
The challenge:
The existing flooring had endured years of foot traffic, water exposure, and the occasional impact from poolside activities. Our task was to refresh and protect the surfaces while keeping the aesthetic bright, clean, and welcoming.
Safety was also a priority, particularly in wet areas, where slip resistance needed to meet high standards without compromising on visual appeal.
The solution:
We used the Dr. Schutz floor remake system to breathe new life into the pool’s floors.
- Cleaning, stripping, and repairing the existing surfaces to create a smooth, even base.
- Recolouring the floors to give them a fresh, vibrant look.
- Adding decorative chips to enhance visual interest and help define different zones.
- Applying an R11 anti-slip coating in the wet area, with a contrasting colour scheme and chip design to clearly distinguish it from dry spaces.
- Sealing the entire floor with a satin PU sealer for a durable, easy-to-maintain finish.
The combination of safety-focused coatings and striking decorative elements ensured the new flooring was both functional and inviting.
The results:
Once complete, the transformation was clear to see – a brighter, more inviting environment for the community. Visitors are greeted by a modern, well-maintained space, while the upgraded surfaces provide a safer experience for all.
