Case study: Deep cleaning an iconic North East cultural venue
Project overview:
When it comes to recognisable North East landmarks, they don’t come much grander and more illustrious than the Theatre Royal. Originally opening on Drury Lane in 1788 before moving to its permanent home on Grey Street in 1837, the historic cultural venue hosts hundreds of performances every year. But all of this activity takes a toll.
The team at the Theatre Royal approached us for a thorough deep clean of all of the carpets in the iconic building, removing any debris or damage accumulated over the course of hundreds of shows.
The challenge:
From the classic ruby red of the upper gallery to the elaborate red and gold patterning of the lower seating areas, restoring the theatre’s carpets to match their original look required meticulous attention to detail and industry-leading equipment working in tandem.
The solution:
Having worked with big names in the hospitality sector such as The Holiday Inn and Staybridge Suites, we understand the stresses that carpets like these are subjected to over time. From drinks spills to chewing gum, hosting hundreds of visitors each night is sure to leave carpets with stubborn marks and stains.
To address this, we employed cutting-edge cleaning equipment that deftly removed any debris and trapped dirt from the significant footfall of crowds. As mentioned, chewing gum and other foodstuffs were also gently removed using specialist tools. We were incredibly careful not to damage the carpets, especially given their historical value.
We also made sure to carry out any cleaning works out of business hours to ensure minimal disruption to daily performances. After all, no one wants to hear high-power carpet cleaning equipment during a production of their favourite musical.
The results:
Once the project was finished and our team moved out, the Theatre Royal’s carpets were fully restored to their original glory. While the flooring might not be the star of the show, it’s a supporting role that should not be underestimated.
After all, being able to walk into such a grand space and navigate to your seat without worrying about sticky, dusty carpets simply makes the experience that much more enjoyable. This project was a delight to complete, and we look forward to more like it.
